Battery health says 96% — so why does my Mac only last four hours?

Because those two numbers answer different questions, and only one of them is about your afternoon.
Health is the size of the tank. 96% means the battery still holds 96% of the capacity it left the factory with. That's it. It says nothing about how fast you're emptying it — and runtime is capacity divided by the power going out. A full-size tank in a car burning fuel twice as fast gets you half the distance, and nobody blames the tank.
So "96% health, 4 hours of runtime" is almost never a battery problem. It's a power problem wearing a battery costume.
The arithmetic, once
A MacBook pack holds roughly 54 watt-hours in a 13-inch Air and up to 100 in a 16-inch Pro. The rows below assume a mid-size pack of about 70 Wh — scale up for a 16-inch, down for an Air:

Four hours of runtime on a 96% battery means the Mac is sitting near the third row. The question isn't "why is my battery bad" — it's "what is putting me in the 15–20 W row, and do I need it right now?" That has a specific answer with a specific name, and it's measurable.
Why health looks fine when everyone says batteries degrade
Because it usually is fine. Apple designs these packs to still hold about 80% of factory capacity after a thousand charge cycles — 80% is the industry's end-of-life convention, not a line at which your Mac starts misbehaving. The number you're staring at is doing its job; it just isn't the number that explains your day.
There's also a reporting gap worth knowing: macOS keeps no history of your capacity. It shows today's value and nothing else, so you can't tell whether 96% is where you were last spring or a fast slide from 100%. When it really is the battery
Three cases where the pack is genuinely the story:
- Below 80% capacity — the conventional end-of-life mark, and the point Apple designs for at a thousand cycles. Runtime is visibly shorter at the same workload, and replacement becomes a reasonable conversation.
- High cycle count with capacity holding suspiciously well — worth watching over months rather than acting on today.
- Sudden shutdowns well before empty, or the Mac reporting a fault — worth a service appointment rather than a settings change. Apple notes these are likelier with a chemically older battery and in the cold: a tired pack sags under load before the percentage catches up.

The five-minute diagnosis
- Check capacity against 80%. Above it, stop suspecting the battery.
- Look at what the Mac is using right now, in watts. Not a unitless "Energy Impact" score — actual watts, per app. If the top row is a video call or a busy browser, you've found your four hours.

Questions people ask
Is 96% battery health good after a year?
Yes — that's ordinary aging. Apple designs for about 80% after a thousand cycles, and how quickly you approach it depends mostly on heat and on time spent sitting at 100%, which is why macOS holds charging at 80% when it predicts you're plugged in for a while (that's the "Charging On Hold" message).
Will replacing the battery double my runtime?
If capacity is 96%, no — you'd get back about 4%. Replacing a healthy battery to fix a power problem is the most expensive way to not solve it.
Why does my Mac last longer some days than others?
Because runtime is a division, and the bottom of it changes hourly with your workload. That's exactly why a single "hours remaining" estimate feels like a lie: it's answering a question whose inputs keep moving. A range plus the list of what's using the power is the honest version.
Does cycle count matter more than capacity?
Capacity is what you feel; cycles are the odometer that predicts it. Watch both as a trend, act on capacity.
