Mac says "Charging On Hold" — what does that mean?

Short version: it's deliberate, and it's protecting your battery. Your Mac is plugged in, working normally, and macOS has decided that not charging right now is the better move for the battery's lifespan. Nothing is broken. But the status menu explains itself badly, there are several different holds wearing similar labels — and there's one situation where the hold genuinely isn't the story.

Need 100% right now?
Click the battery icon in the menu bar and choose "Charge to Full Now" — that overrides both the optimized hold and a charge limit for this session. For a permanent change: System Settings → Battery → the info button next to Charging — there you can turn Optimized Battery Charging off (or off until tomorrow), and on macOS 26.4+ set the Charge Limit itself.
One behavior that surprises people: even with a limit set, your Mac will occasionally charge to 100% on purpose — it does this to keep its own state-of-charge estimate calibrated. That's documented behavior, not a malfunction of the limit.
Should you fight the hold at all?
Honest answer: mostly no. Time spent sitting at 100% and heat are the two big accelerants of battery aging, and both features exist to reduce the first one. If your Mac guesses your schedule wrong (shift work, irregular travel), that's the legitimate reason to override — the machine-learned routine assumes you have a routine.
When "on hold" is not the real story
All of the above assumes the adapter has watts to spare. There's a different case that looks similar in the menu but isn't: the Mac needs more power than the adapter delivers. A 30 W brick on a machine pulling 45 W, a cable that can't carry what the brick can make, a hub that keeps 15 W for itself — then the battery quietly covers the difference, and the charge drops while you're plugged in. No status string explains that one.

Is "Charging On Hold" bad for the battery?
The opposite — it exists to slow battery aging. The battery is fine, the charger is fine, and the hold releases itself when macOS predicts you'll need a full charge.
Why does my Mac sometimes charge to 100% even with a limit set?
Calibration. macOS occasionally completes a full charge to keep its state-of-charge estimates accurate — documented behavior for both Optimized Battery Charging and Charge Limit.
The percentage is dropping while plugged in. Is that the hold?
If the status says "Charging On Hold", small drops are normal — charging resumes when needed (with a Charge Limit, after a drop of more than 5%). If there's no hold message and the charge keeps falling under load, check the adapter-side arithmetic instead: that's the "needs more than it receives" case above, and it's about watts, not settings.
