Does quitting apps actually save battery on a Mac?

Short answer: usually no — and occasionally very much yes. The difference between the two cases is not a matter of opinion; it's one measurement. This page explains both halves honestly, because the internet mostly tells you only the first one.
Why the common advice says "no" — and why it's mostly right
macOS is genuinely good at idle apps. App Nap puts applications you're not looking at into a low-power state; background work gets throttled; an app sitting in the Dock doing nothing typically costs a rounding error. Quitting ten of those buys you minutes you could count on one hand — while costing you relaunch time, lost window state, and a browser that rebuilds every tab from scratch (a burst of work that itself uses energy).
So when an article says "quitting apps doesn't help, let macOS manage it" — for the average app, on an average afternoon, that's correct. If the quit-everything ritual worked, you'd see it in the hours; people try it every day and don't.
The case where "no" is wrong
Power use across apps isn't spread evenly — it's lopsided. On a typical working Mac, most running apps sit near zero while one or two processes carry most of the load: a call app mid-meeting, a browser tab with a busy site, an indexer catching up, an app that broke after an update and started spinning. Those aren't napping, and macOS won't quit them for you — it has no idea the video call ended an hour ago.
Quitting that app is a different transaction entirely. You're not shaving a rounding error; you're removing the single biggest line on the bill. That one quit can be worth real minutes — the kind you notice as "made it to the end of the meeting" rather than as a statistic.
So the real question is: which case are you in?
You can't tell from the Dock, and Activity Monitor makes it harder than it should: its Energy Impact column is a relative number with no unit — Apple's own documentation describes it as a relative measure. "Chrome: 42.3" of what?
The checkable version looks like this:
- See the list in watts. If the top app is using a large share of the total, you're in the "yes" case. If everything is small and even, you're in the "no" case — quit nothing, close the lid, move on.
- Get the price before you act. WattMate names what quitting the top app is worth in minutes — and doubles it in clock terms, because "+24 min" really means "about 2 h 58 m instead of 2 h 34 m".
- Demand the receipt. Two minutes after you quit, WattMate re-measures the Mac and prints what actually changed. - Apps you'll reopen in ten minutes. Relaunching a heavy app — and a browser restoring twenty tabs — is a burst of work that can cost the minutes the quit was supposed to return.
- Sync clients mid-upload. Quit them, and they redo the catch-up later, possibly on battery again.
- Anything macOS already napped. The cost is already near zero; there's nothing left to get back.

Should I quit apps every time I unplug?
No. As a ritual, it's theater — most of those apps cost nothing. Check the list once, quit the one expensive row if there is one, and stop there.
Why does quitting everything sometimes seem to help?
Because somewhere in "everything" was the one app that mattered. You paid with twenty relaunches for one useful quit — measuring first gets you the same minutes for one click.
Is Activity Monitor enough to find the heavy app?
Sometimes. Its Energy Impact column ranks apps, but the number has no unit, at most a 12-hour average by way of history, and no answer to "what is that worth in minutes". If the ranking alone settles your case, you don't need anything else — that's a fine outcome too.
